After Years of Practice, Are There Still Postures That Baffle You?

You know the Dialogue, you've practiced a Posture hundreds—maybe thousands—of times.

And you may find yourself wondering:

What am I actually supposed to be doing here?

Maybe you've tried harder.

Listened more closely to the Dialogue.

Watched other people practice that Posture.

And you're still not quite sure what you should be focusing on.

What if what you're missing isn't more effort?

What if you need a clearer Focus Point?

What If You Knew What to Focus On?

These are the places to focus your attention in each Posture:

What you are hearing in the Dialogue.

The part of your body you are using and what you are doing with it.

(in other words:) What muscles you're contracting.

Every Action in the moment you are doing it (while not holding your breath).

Nothing else!

Sometimes you need to understand what Action you may need to focus specifically on.

That's what happens in the Individual Posture Sessions.

Jim watches a real student practice a Posture and identifies what they need to focus on.

Then you get to watch, listen and ask yourself:

Could that Focus Point help my Practice too?

Watch Jim Work With Real People Through Every Posture

Bikram Yoga Individual Posture Sessions lets you watch Jim work with real people through all 26 Postures and 2 Breathing Exercises.

These aren't Posture demonstrations.

Jim observes the person in front of him.

How they're trying to do the Posture.

Where they're struggling.

What their body can do today.

And what they need to focus on.

That's why there are multiple sessions for most Postures.

The Posture may be the same. The person doing it isn't.

Different People May Need Different Focus Points

“The Dialogue works for 99% of people, 99% of the time, but every person is different. There’s + and - for each person, each Posture, each day.”

This is how Bikram Yoga can be the same class every day and still reconcile the individuality of each student. Something that was never successfully done before Bikram created his system in 1965.

You can see how the “+ and -” works when Jim observes Curtis Walker in Toe Stand.

Curtis's arms are a little shorter, so his fingertips don't quite reach the floor. Jim notices immediately:

“That's okay. He's got the balance.”

In the same session, Jim says, “That's where he's at now,” and explains that what matters is how Curtis is trying to do the Posture.

Jim calls the individual observations he gives a student their “+ and -” — what to concentrate on in that Posture.

He isn't correcting the Posture for them. He gives them a Focus Point they can take into their own Practice and work with.

There’s More to See Than Just the Posture

Jim Kallett spent more than 30 years teaching and studying directly with Bikram.

He served as Senior Faculty at more than 50 Official Bikram Yoga Teacher Trainings and Bikram told him to teach Posture Clinics and Seminars around the world.

But Jim wasn't only learning the Postures.

He was watching how Bikram worked with different people trying to do the same Posture.

What he noticed.

What he told them to work on.

Why one person received a different observation than another person.

That accumulated Source Knowledge is what Jim brings to every Individual Posture Session.

Bikram Yoga Source Knowledge Wasn't Always Easy to Return To

Bikram taught in the room.

Through the Dialogue,

Teacher Trainings,

Seminars,

Posture Clinics,

demonstrations and individual observations.

You might have heard something that changed how you understood a Posture—but once the class, Training or Clinic was over you couldn't simply go back and watch it again.

That's part of what makes the Individual Posture Sessions different.

Jim's teaching and observations are preserved on video so you can return to the Sessions again and again as your Practice continues.

Source Knowledge you don't have to remember hearing.

Take a Focus Point Into Your Next Class

You don't need to watch all 86 Individual Posture Sessions before you can put what you learn into Practice.

Start with one Posture you struggle with or have questions about.

Watch Jim work with a few different people.

Listen to what he observes and what he tells each person to focus on.

Notice whether there’s a Focus Point that helps you understand what to work with in your own Practice.

Then take that Focus Point into class and apply it to your Practice.

Bikram Yoga practitioner Kate Fiorucci describes applying what she learned from Jim:

“This was extremely practical — I could apply the knowledge I got from Jim to my practice that day.”

Come back and watch again.

There May Be More Behind the Words You've Heard for Years

What “correct” means in Standing-Head-to-Knee Pose.

Why “locking the knee” has nothing to do with the knee—Jim explains it's about contracting the quadricep muscle, and the “neurological event” that it is.

Why you should do “less percentage” of a Posture instead of modifying it.

In Ty Reed’s Individual Posture Session, you can see what Jim means. Ty asks which is more important in the Half Tortoise Pose—getting his forehead to the floor or getting his hips onto his heels.

Jim quotes Bikram:

“Who do you love more, your Mother or your sister?”

And….

“It doesn't matter what you can do; it matters how you're trying.”

The Individual Posture Sessions let you explore what's behind the Dialogue’s instructions.

What You See Can Change What You Teach

As a Teacher, you deliver the Dialogue while watching different students try to do the same Posture.

But one student may need your attention in one place.

Another may need something different.

Watching Jim work with real people gives you an opportunity to study what he sees, what he says and why.

This can help you find your way to address the “+ and -” for individual students, without changing the Dialogue that works for “99% of people, 99% of the time”.

Michelle Skala experienced this from the student side while working with Jim on Eagle Pose:

“Something he showed me was how much I don't sit into that Posture — and I think I am. Like, I think I'm doing it, but I don't.”

Sometimes what a student thinks they're doing and what a Teacher can observe are two different things.

What you learn may give you more to see in your own Practice and in the students you teach.
